Most parents ask their teenager "what do you want to do in life" and get a shrug back. I don't blame the teenager. It's an impossible question to answer at fifteen.

Here's a better one I ask instead. What's something you did recently where you completely lost track of time?

That question usually gets a real answer. And it tells you far more about direction than "what do you want to be" ever will. The future isn't a single decision a teenager makes one day. It's built out of a hundred small moments like that, if someone's paying attention to them.
